
Las Cruces police arrested a man suspected of stabbing a 28-year-old during a disagreement on Saturday.
Shortly after noon on Saturday, July 11, 2026, Las Cruces police and fire were dispatched to the report of a stabbing on the 800 block of east Madrid Avenue. First responders arrived to find a 28-year-old man suffering from what appeared to be at least one stab wound.
He was airlifted in critical condition to University Medical Center of El Paso. He remains hospitalized on Monday.
The man believed to be responsible for the stabbing, 37-year-old Pascual Jose Diaz, was located nearby and taken into custody.
Investigators believe the two men were involved in a verbal argument that escalated.
Diaz is charged with felony counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence. He was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is initially being held without bond.
