The Las Cruces Police Department is comprised of a unique and diverse workforce that includes 83 civilian employees and 200 commissioned officers who patrol more than 77 square miles of incorporated city limits. The men and women of the department answer approximately 160,000 calls for service each year and generate roughly 40,000 reports.

LCPD Earns CALEA Accreditation
The Las Cruces Police Department has earned prestigious accreditation from CALEA – the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies – as one of the few police departments nationally with policies that adhere to the highest standards in the profession.
CALEA accreditation, considered the gold standard in public safety with fewer than 5% of law enforcement agencies nationwide having achieved it, means LCPD has demonstrated that it has comprehensive policies in place and approved practices that support transparent and accountable operations. The accreditation demonstrates that LCPD is committed to safeguards that ensure it is serving the community with professionalism and integrity.
CALEA is an independent credentialing authority created in 1979 by the four major law enforcement membership associations: the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the National Sheriff’s Association and the Police Executive Research Forum.
CALEA Public Comment Portal
CALEA has established a Public Comment Portal to receive feedback regarding LCPD’s compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services and overall candidacy for accredited status. Las Cruces Police patrol boundaries within the City of Las Cruces which is roughly 77 square miles. LCPD also partners with other agencies such as the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State Police and New Mexico State University Police on special operations and other agency-assisted calls.
The Las Cruces Police Department is allotted 220 sworn officers. LCPD also employs Animal Control and Codes Enforcement officers along with approximately 100 civilian personnel.
The Las Cruces Police Department conducts a training academy for new officers annually. Job announcements are made through the City of Las Cruces’ Human Resources Department and through LCPD‘s Facebook page. LCPD also accepts applicants for lateral transfers from other agencies.
