The City of Las Cruces reminds owners of short-term property rentals they are required to pay lodgers tax. Lodgers tax is a 5% occupancy tax for revenues generated within lodging establishments. The tax is used for advertising, publicizing and promoting the city and some recreational and tourist facilities, and the acquisition and construction of such facilities.

Short-term rental properties became subject to paying lodgers tax on January 1, 2020. They include properties that rent through hosting services such as Airbnb, Vrbo and more.

Those required to pay the lodgers tax must create an online account at: lascrucesnm-self.govplatform.com, answer questions about the property, and pay a $50 registration fee.

They must then pay the taxes at lascrucesnm-self.govplatform.com. Tax payments and reporting are due by the 25th of each month for the previous month. If the property was not rented in the previous month, a $0 amount must be entered by the 25th of the following month. Short-term rentals are only required to pay Lodgers Tax and are NOT required to pay the convention center fee.

The tax amount is 5% of the gross taxable rentals (amount collected x 0.05)
