Prescription bottles.

Las Cruces police, the Drug Enforcement Administration and other law enforcement agencies are hosting a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday at several locations within the community.

The prescription drug take-back event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2025, is open to anyone who wishes to properly dispose prescription drugs. The service is free, anonymous and no questions will be asked.

Las Cruces and area donation sites include:

  • Sam’s Club, 2711 N. Telshor Blvd., Las Cruces
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market, 150 Sonoma Ranch Blvd., Las Cruces
  • Walmart Supercenter, 1550 S. Valley Dr., Las Cruces
  • Walgreens, 3100 N. Main St., Las Cruces
  • Mesilla Town Hall, 2231 Avenida de Mesilla, Mesilla
  • Anthony Public Library, 750 Landers Rd., Anthony, N.M.
  • White Sands Missile Range, 465 Dyer St., WSMR
  • Sunland Park Police Department, 1000 McNutt Rd., Sunland Park

Residents are encouraged to drop off expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs – in pills, tablets, patches and other solid forms – during the event. Liquids, such as cough syrups, must remain tightly sealed in their original containers. Take-back centers will accept vaping devices and cartridges if the lithium batteries are removed.

Syringes, sharps and illicit substances will not be accepted.

The take-back initiative addresses vital public safety and health issues. Unused and outdated medications are susceptible to misuse or abuse that can result in accidental poisonings and overdoses. Traditional methods of disposing unused medications, such as disposing them in the trash or flushing down a toilet, can pose safety and health hazards.
