The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will return to Las Cruces Public Libraries in February.

The Las Cruces Public Libraries, in partnership with GECU, carry out the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to offer free tax help from IRS certified VITA volunteers to the public.

The VITA program offers free tax preparation services for individuals and families who need assistance filing their taxes. Trained volunteers help eligible taxpayers prepare and file federal and state tax returns, ensuring accurate and stress-free service.

Individuals seeking tax assistance are asked to bring a valid photo ID, Social Security card or ITIN, proof of direct deposit, a copy of the previous year’s tax return, and Form 1095-A (if applicable). For married individuals filing jointly, both spouses must be present with the required documentation. College students should be aware of whether a parent or guardian will claim them as a dependent.

Services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the daily service quota has been reached, walk-in clients may be turned away. The VITA program does not serve residents of Puerto Rico, foreign students, individuals with farm income or loss, foreign-earned income, rental income, or military-related tax filings.

The VITA program will operate from February 2 through April 14, 2026, at the following library locations:

Thomas Branigan Memorial Library
Mondays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Munson Branch Library
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1–5 p.m.

For additional information, community members may contact library staff at [email protected].
