Crime scene tape in front of a road.

Las Cruces police and the Officer-involved Incident Task Force are investigating a shooting that occurred Thursday morning on the 900 block of Walnut Street, across the street from Lynn Middle School, that resulted in the death of one man and non-life-threatening injuries to another.

The incident occurred about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2025.

The Las Cruces Police Department officer involved in the incident was not injured. He will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for such an incident.

The investigation is in its early stages, so details of what occurred are not yet known. Additional information will be made public at an appropriate time and as the investigation warrants.

The incident did not occur on the campus of Lynn Middle School, but a portion of Walnut Street in front of the school will be closed to traffic for the duration of the on-scene investigation. Lynn Middle School will have bus and parent drop-off on the northwest side of the school, near the gymnasium, with access from Nevada Avenue.

The Officer-involved Incident Task Force includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police. Investigators gather evidence and collect statements that are then passed along to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
