The man who died in Thursday’s shooting on Walnut Street has been identified as 18-year-old Josiah Perrault.

Perrault succumbed to injuries he received during the incident that occurred about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2025, on the 900 block of Walnut Street. Another man believed to be involved in the incident was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A news conference to provide additional information on the officer-involved shooting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in Council Chambers at City Hall, 700 N. Main St. The news conference is delayed until next week to allow witness interviews to be completed and to permit Chief Jeremy Story and other LCPD personnel to attend National Police Week in Washington, D.C.

National Police Week is May 11-17, 2025.

The Officer-involved Incident Task Force is investigating the May 8 shooting. The task force includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police. Investigators gather evidence and collect statements that are then passed along to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
