Las Cruces Expands Nuisance Abatement Efforts to Support Healthy Neighborhoods

The City is enhancing its Nuisance Abatement Team (NAT) program to help neighborhoods thrive. By strengthening partnerships across departments, providing more tools for residents, and ensuring property owners have opportunities to bring their properties into compliance, the City is making it easier to maintain safe, welcoming, and vibrant communities.

At Monday’s City Council Work Session, Community Development Director Chris Faivre presented program enhancements including:

• Updated Standards: Adoption of the 2021 International Property Maintenance Code, establishing clear guidelines for all properties, including vacant and boarded buildings.
• Collaborative Teamwork: A multi-department response team with representatives from Code Enforcement, Fire, Police, Community Development, Legal, Housing, and more.
• Resident-Friendly Tools: Easy online reporting, an interactive NAT property map to encourage participation and transparency.
• Balanced Solutions: A fair approach that combines enforcement when necessary, with support for property owners who are ready to make improvements.

In the future, staff will bring forward an ordinance to track vacant residential and commercial properties to ensure owners are dealing with them in a timely manner.
