Three firefighters looking through the debris of a house fire.

Las Cruces firefighters who extinguished a residential structure fire on Fairway Drive have located one victim who is deceased.

The victim, who has not been identified, was located inside the structure. The victim’s remains will be transported to the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office in Albuquerque for autopsy.

Firefighters are continuing to comb through debris to ensure there are no additional victims. Investigators will also be looking for evidence to help determine the cause of the incident. The incident was reported as an explosion shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2026. Las Cruces fire and police investigators, along with investigators from ATF, are looking into the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire. The explosion and fire caused a portion of the structure, primarily the roof of the garage, to collapse. There were two vehicles inside the garage. The single-story residence is part of a duplex. Besides smoke damage, there was minimal structural damage to the adjoining two-story residence to the west.

Three residents from the adjoining home are temporarily displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
Other nearby neighbors were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure.

A portion of Fairway Drive, between Telshor Boulevard and Don Roser Drive, will remain closed for the duration of the on-site investigation.
