Las Cruces Public Libraries is hosting “February is for Lovers” month.

The first event is a film screening of the movie “Love in the Time of Cholera,” based on the original book by Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The film screening is from 2-4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. The movie is rated R.

“Love in the Time of Cholera” tells the story of love between Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza, and her husband Juvenal Urbino. At the monthly meeting of the Latiné-X Lit Book Club we will discuss the book and film from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. Latiné-X Lit on FILM is a film series that accompanies the Latiné-X Lit Book Club.

The English as Second Language Film Club will screen “West Side Story,” from 1961, from 1-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15 in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. ESL Film Club views Latine-X authored plays that were made into films in the English language with Spanish subtitles.

To aid in pronunciation, at the end of the film, participants will read a scene from the movie. “West Side Story,” a modern version of “Romeo and Juliet,” was a groundbreaking and controversial work of cultural representation and the issues portrayed on screen remain relevant to the Latino community today.

There are many more Latiné-X stories to explore at the library. Those interested can drop by the reference desk for a copy of a recommended Latiné-X romance reading list. The teen section of the library will also be hosting a special “Love is Love” book display throughout the month of February.

Copies of “Love in the Time of Cholera” are available at the reference desk. Readers can access an e-reader copy in Spanish through the library’s Libby app. For more information, contact Mindy Del Campo, Librarian, at (575) 528-4024 or by email at [email protected].

This document can be made available in alternative formats by calling (575) 528-4102, TTY 711. Those who require accommodations for a disability to participate in these events are encouraged to call the library at (575) 528-4102, TTY 711 at least 48 hours in advance.
