“Engaging Masters: Parody Art” Opens at the Museum of Art

The Las Cruces Museum of Art is hosting “Engaging Masters: Parody Art” from the Collection of David Lyman and Chris Alexander, Feb. 7 through May 3, 2025.

The collection features more than 80 works of art by 34 artists that parody historic masterworks and contemporary art. The exhibit’s opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, 491 N. Main St.

Art collector David Lyman will conduct a gallery walk-through at 5:30 p.m.

At times humorous, other times contemplative, this engaging exhibit features over thirty contemporary artists who reinterpret the artwork or artistic styles of a wide range of master artists including Johannes Vermeer, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Keith Harring. Through paintings, prints and sculptures the artists convey their own unique expressions of well-known artworks. The exhibit offers viewers an informal introduction into the world of art history by presenting approachable art based on the classics.

David Lyman is a retired physician, avid gardener and life-long collector of art. Chris Alexander is a psychologist, watercolorist, art collector and lover of all things New Mexico. They enjoy living and hiking in sunny Las Cruces with their dog Carlos. In recent years, they have collected many pieces of art from contemporary artists who delve into the rich history of art to create often humorous and always thought-provoking takes on famous works.

There will be numerous events during the exhibit run. Artist Ben Steele will present a virtual artist talk on Feb. 28 and David Lyman will discuss his artwork collection on March 15 in the museum gallery. Other presentations are being developed. The museum is located at 491 N. Main St. and is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays. There is no admission fee.

The museum is accessible from Roadrunner Transit Route 1 Stop 1.
