Master Sergeant Melissa Gonzales.

The City of Las Cruces is proud to announce the selection of Master Sergeant Melissa Gonzales as the Grand Marshal for the upcoming Electric Light Parade on July 3rd. As communities across the nation reflect on 250 years of American history, this honor recognizes not only MSG Gonzales’ distinguished service, but also the profound and lasting contributions women have made throughout the history of the United States military. From breaking barriers to leading with strength and resilience, women in uniform have played a critical role in protecting our nation and shaping its future.

A New Mexico native who now serves the Las Cruces community, MSG Gonzales has dedicated her career to leadership, service, and mentorship—both in uniform and at home. Enlisting in the New Mexico Army National Guard in 2007 as a Motor Transport Operator, she has served in a wide range of leadership and operational roles, including assignments with the 1st Battalion, 200th Infantry Regiment and the Recruiting and Retention Battalion.

Throughout her career, MSG Gonzales has deployed in support of international peacekeeping efforts and has led critical initiatives focused on training, mobilization readiness, and recruitment. She currently serves as Section Chief for the Outlaws Recruiting Team in Las Cruces, where she leads efforts to connect local youth and community members with opportunities in the New Mexico National Guard. Her dedication to service extends beyond her military duties, as she actively engages with schools and community partners across southern New Mexico.

This year’s parade theme, “Stars, Stripes and City Lights,” reflects the spirit of patriotism, unity, and community pride that defines Las Cruces. MSG Gonzales’ selection as Grand Marshal embodies these values and serves as a meaningful tribute to the legacy of women in military service—past, present, and future.

As part of this year’s celebration, community members are encouraged to visit Veterans Park to experience the newly installed statue honoring Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman in United States history to receive the Medal of Honor. This powerful tribute stands as a reminder of the courage, perseverance, and groundbreaking achievements of women who have served our nation.

The Electric Light Parade, taking place on July 3rd, is a cherished Las Cruces tradition that brings the community together in celebration of patriotism, unity, and local pride. This year’s event will shine even brighter as we honor MSG Gonzales and recognize the enduring impact of women in the armed forces.
