Black History Month Celebrated at Las Cruces Public Libraries

Las Cruces Public Libraries is celebrating Black History Month with a “Beloved” movie and book discussions in February.

The movie, “Beloved,” based on the original book by Toni Morrison, will be screened at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 200 E. Picacho Ave. The movie is rated R.

At the monthly meeting of the Banned Books Club, we will discuss the book and film, “Beloved,” at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 27, in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. “Beloved” is the agonizing remembrances of a former slave in post-Civil War Ohio and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988.

The Social Justice Reading Group will discuss, “A Little Devil in America: In Praise of Black Performance,” by Hanif Abdurraqib from 3-4 p.m. Feb. 25 at Branigan Memorial Library. The book is the 2002 recipient of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction and a National Book Award finalist. The discussion and listening session will focus on the cultural impact of various artists from Michael Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Billy Dee Williams, the Wu-Tan Clan, Dave Chappelle and others.
