Compete to be the last runner standing in this new event on Oct. 31, 2025.

Runners should prepare themselves for the inaugural, Day of the Dead edition, Land of Enchantment Backyard Ultra run. Wanderlust Running Unlimited presents a “last runner standing” race set to take place at the Prehistoric Trackways National Monument on Oct. 31, 2025, at 7 a.m.

Shane Asbury, owner and race director for Wanderlust Running Unlimited was thrilled to bring this event to the area, “I wanted to bring something unique to the area and run the event on different trails that are not frequented by other trail event,” he said.

Asbury has worked with Visit Las Cruces Destination Experience Manager, Hilary Dutcher and Wanderlust ambassador, Dena Carr to organize and launch the event. Success with the State 47 road marathon inspired Asbury to suggest a backyard ultra in hopes of receiving the same support.

“It will be a challenge for those who dare to be the last person standing,” Asbury said. “So please join us for the inaugural Land of Enchantment Backyard Ultra.”

The Prehistoric Trackways National Monument provides runners with a network of well-maintained trails made of crushed gravel, some elevation changes and a stunning view of the Organ Mountains. The location allows for personal aid setup around the start and finish areas, campsites and adequate parking.

Wanderlust Running and Visit Las Cruces invite runners to register and challenge themselves to their limits in the race to be the last person standing.
