Fire Cadets with their uniform

The Las Cruces Fire Department is now accepting applications for its next training academy that’s set to begin in February 2025.

The fire academy will begin Feb. 24, 2025. If enough qualified applicants are received, the pool of candidates may be used to fill a second fire academy that’s tentatively set to begin in July 2025. Each fire academy could have as many as 20 Fire Cadets in each class.

Applicants are required to submit an application electronically through the City’s website. Successful applicants are also required to pass a written examination, an acrophobia test, background investigation, medical examination and physical ability test.

Fire Cadets learn fire suppression techniques, emergency medical services, hazardous material response and vehicle extrication techniques amongst other critical lessons required to be a successful firefighter.

A more complete list of qualifications, duties and responsibilities is available on the job announcement for Fire Cadet on the City’s website. Salary for full-time Fire Cadets is equivalent to $45,136 annually while in the academy.

Graduates of LCFD’s fire academy progress to full-time, regular position firefighters at one of eight Las Cruces fire stations. Construction on the City’s ninth fire station is set to begin in September.

Applications are being accepted through Oct. 20, 2024.

For further information, contact the Las Cruces Fire Academy at (575) 528-4250 or email [email protected].
