Youth playing basketball

The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department is offering individual registration for Youth Sportsmanship Basketball beginning Aug. 22, 2024.

There will be four age divisions offered to all genders between the ages of 4 and 12, and one division each for middle school boys and girls (14U). Proof of age, or a Parks and Recreation Activity ID Card, is required for all divisions. Middle school participants will also need to provide grade verification.

Registration fee is $50 per individual with a jersey or $40 for returning players who already have a jersey. League play will begin the week of Oct. 7, 2024. Space is limited in all divisions and registration is first come, first served.

Online registration:

  • Open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, or until division capacity is filled.
  • Any sibling team-placement requests must be pre-approved by Meerscheidt staff. Review conditions of Team Placement for details and restrictions.

In-person registration:

  • Open 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024, or until division capacity is filled.
  • In-person registration will be at Meerscheidt Recreation Center, 1600 E. Hadley Avenue
  • A current Parks and Recreation activity ID card, or birth certificate, is required to register. Middle school participants may need to provide grade verification.

To obtain a Parks and Recreation activity ID card:

  • A parent or guardian, with the participant, must appear in person at Meersheidt Recreation Center to sign permission forms, show proof of age and have the participant’s photo taken.
  • ID cards can be obtained from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. ID cards will not be issued on registration dates.

Team placement:

  • Formation of teams is at the discretion of Meerscheidt staff, and participants will be required to play in their respective age division.
  • Requesting placement onto specific teams, or switching teams, is not allowed.
  • Siblings in the same household may be placed on the same team, but only if they qualify for the same age division and the request was documented by Meerscheidt staff during the registration process. Call (575) 541-2563 to ensure the sibling-team request was documented.

Volunteer coaches needed:

  • The coaching volunteer program is a rewarding way to spend time with your kids and their friends while helping them learn the fundamentals of various sports like basketball.
  • All levels of coaching experience are welcomed, and beginners are encouraged!
  • To become a volunteer coach, please contact Athletics at (575) 541-2563.

For more information, call the Meerscheidt Recreation Center at (575) 541-2563 or email [email protected].
