The Las Cruces Fire Department provides essential programs like Mobile Integrated Health, LIGHT and the Vecino Program. LCFD also offers station tours, fire extinguisher training and CPR classes that are all aimed at supporting and educating our community.
Mobile Integrated Health Program
The purpose of Mobile Integrated Health program is to provide referrals, visitations and treatment services to high utilizers of the 911 system and community members with limited access to health/social services so they can access appropriate health/social resources and reduce their use of the 911 system. Learn more about MIH or contact us for a visit.
LIGHT Program
(Lessen the Incidence of Grief, Harm & Trauma)
The LIGHT program’s conception began in spring 2022 at the request of Las Cruces City Council to help de-escalate situations when it comes to possible mental health crisis. After approximately one year of planning and preparing, Project LIGHT officially launched on March 6, 2023. Two LIGHT teams were formed, each consisting of one firefighter/paramedic and one social worker. The reason for these two professions teaming up was to have the ability to provide in-field assessments of an individual for medical and behavioral crisis. The LIGHT teams can transport non-emergency patients to behavioral health facilities.
Project LIGHT operates with one team on duty 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday. LIGHT teams respond to six call types through the 911 system: behavioral/mental health crisis, suicide attempts, suicidal ideations, overdose, CPR and to calls where there is a death.
The Vecino Program
Vecino is the Spanish word for a neighbor, and that’s what the Las Cruces Fire Department strives to be, a good neighbor. The Vecino Program targets our local senior residents who are at least 60 years of age and/or are homebound because of a medical disability and have a non-existent or insufficient local support system. Firefighters call our Vecinos daily to check on their welfare. The program currently serves more than 35 residents with phone calls typically made between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. each day by our firefighters. This year approximately 13,000 calls were made to our Vecinos.
