Fire Academy

The Las Cruces Fire Department is paramilitary in style. Cadets are instructed in the skills of:

  • Firefighting
  • Hazardous Materials Response
  • Technical Rescue
  • Vehicle Extrication

Strict Discipline, Teamwork, & Safety

Strict discipline, teamwork, and safety are the foundation of the academy. Cadets must excel in academics, skill evaluations, physical fitness and teamwork to successfully complete the academy. The high standards established by the department create an atmosphere where a commitment to excellence is essential.

Certifications Upon Completion

Fire Cadets receive the following certifications upon completion of the academy:

  • IFSAC Firefighter I and II
  • ICS-100, 200
  • NIMS IS-700
  • IFSAC Hazmat A and O
  • NM EMT-Basic Training (subject to change)

Daily Schedule

(5-days per week)

  • 6 a.m. – Physical Training
  • 7 a.m. – Prepare for Inspection
  • 8 a.m. – Inspection
  • 8:15 a.m. – Classroom Instruction/Field Evolutions
  • Noon Lunch
  • 1 p.m. – Classroom Instruction/Field Evolutions
  • 4 p.m. – Dismissal
