District 5 – Becky Corran

Biography

Becky Corran is an advocate and educator committed to serving Las Cruces with an emphasis on equity, access and health. She was elected as Las Cruces first queer City Councilor in 2021 and represents Council District 5, the northeast portion of Las Cruces.

As a City Councilor, Becky’s focus has been on housing, transportation and sustainability, including zoning reform and energy transition. She has served on (and chaired) the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley and Metropolitan Planning Organization Boards and been represented Council on the Roadrunner Transit Advisory Board. In addition, she was appointed in 2023 to represent Las Cruces and southern New Mexico on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Local Government Advisory Committee. While serving on Council, she has advocated for Las Cruces to advance in support of LGBTQ+ people and to build strong connections to NMSU and DACC.

 

With twenty years of experience in public health and education, Becky has worked with diverse communities. Her service and leadership has included LGBTQ+ advocacy; fostering animals; working with farmworker communities and building bridges in higher education. She has served as a board member for a number of educational and community organizations, and is currently serving on the Roadrunner Food Bank board.

Becky graduated with a Master of Public Health from the University of Arizona, and works as a professor at Doña Ana Community College, where she teaches courses focused on community health.

Powers & Duties

City Charter Section 2.04 General Powers and Duties

All powers of the city shall be vested in the council, except as otherwise provided by law or this Charter, and the council shall provide for the exercise thereof and for the performance of all duties and obligations imposed on the city by law.
