Biography
Johana currently serves as the City of Las Cruces Mayor Pro Tem and City Councilor for District 4. Since her election in 2019, she has focused her efforts on ensuring the city prioritizes anti-poverty efforts to improve the quality of life for ALL Las Crucens.
Mayor Pro Tem Bencomo is proudly an immigrant, having migrated from Mexico to the United States with her family when she was just eight years old. Johana has called Las Cruces home since she was 18 years old. She attended New Mexico State University, where she earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Government and Master of Social Work.
Mayor Pro Tem Bencomo has committed to a career in justice work and building power with all historically excluded communities, a framework that continues to drive her leadership while on the city council. She currently also works for a state-wide organization, supporting other women in elected office. She is a Field Instructor with NMSU’s School of Social Work, a board member for the New Mexico Environmental Law Center, and a board member for the national organization, Local Progress.
Johana is also a wife, a parent, a dog mom, a community organizer, and a lover of justice and New Mexico’s borderlands.

City Charter Section 2.04 General Powers and Duties
All powers of the city shall be vested in the council, except as otherwise provided by law or this Charter, and the council shall provide for the exercise thereof and for the performance of all duties and obligations imposed on the city by law.
