Frequently Asked Questions

Before a business registration is issued, all businesses operating in New Mexico must register with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department and have a State Tax Identification Number, also known as a CRS number. The Tax and Revenue Department in Las Cruces is located at:

Once you have received your CRS number, apply for a business registration at the Community Development Department. You must bring your business State of New Mexico Tax Certificate, which will contain the physical address of your business and the CRS number.

Depending on the type of business, the fees may range from $30 to $40. Special events, temporary stands, and other specialty licenses apply.

Yes. A business registration is valid for 12 months. A month before expiration, you will receive a renewal notice via mail and it can be renewed in person or by mail.

Set up a pre-submittal meeting for immediate feedback on items that may need to be address for building construction and/expansions. This meeting will allow the appropriate City staff involved with permitting, inspections, codes, and other City-related questions to meet with you to address your questions during the meeting and define an action plan for you prior to the official submission of application.
