Call for Artists: Community Mural Public Art Project

Request for Qualifications

Deadline to submit: Closed

Las Cruces Public Art is seeking an artist for a mural to be painted with community involvement on the parking lot wall at 906 N Tornillo Street. The design will be in paint-by-number style so that community members of varying ages and artistic abilities can help paint the mural.

At least three qualified candidates will be invited to submit a proposal including a concept design. Each artist will receive a $250 honorarium for their proposal and concept drawing. The Mural Selection Committee will decide the winning proposal and present to the City Art Board at the monthly meeting in April.

Key Goals of the Community Mural Project

  • To bring the community together in an engaging and creative process while beautifying a key public space.
  • Use a paint-by-numbers approach with thick lines between blocks of color (like stained glass), making it possible for community members of widely varying ages and artistic talents to help paint the mural during a one-day public event

In alignment with these goals, the mural design should use abstract-style elements in a colorful composition, and be family-friendly.

Budget – $10,000

Budget for performing the scope of work includes but is not limited to all materials, equipment, labor, insurance, artist fees, and taxes. There is no other funding available.

Location – The parking lot is adjacent to A. Fielder Memorial Safe Haven (Safe Haven) located at 906 N Tornillo Street. The facility provides young people and community residents with a secure neighborhood center where children can gather daily in a safe and fun environment. The parking lot wall is used by both staff and visitors.

Size – The wall space for the mural is approximately 68 in. high by 60 ft. long textured cinder block wall with a rough surface. (see photo).
