Fire Station 9 Art Installation

Call for Artists – CLOSED

GO Bond – Las Cruces Fire Station #9 Public Art Project
Budget: $100,000

Deadline has Passed

Project Intent

General:

The City of Las Cruces Public Art program (LCPA) seeks an artist or artist team to create a site-specific outdoor art piece to promote the forthcoming Fire Station #9. LCPA wishes to commission an art piece that is evocative of the history and ethos of the local firefighting community, adds identity to the fire station and neighborhood, serves as a focal point of the fire station, and is visible from several vantage points. It may be inspired by an original Las Cruces 1915 pumper that will be displayed in the fire station lobby.  The art piece will be prominently installed in front of the new Fire Station facility.

Eligibility:

This commission is open to all artists/artist teams, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, gender variance, national origin, age, religion, marital status, political opinion, or affiliation, or mental or physical handicap. Artists working in any media are eligible to apply. Artists are not required to have previous experience in public art but should demonstrate a level of expertise and professionalism that is commensurate with the project scope and budget.

Las Cruces Fire Station #9 Site Information

Fire Station #9 will be built on the corner of Central Ave. and Sonoma Ranch Blvd. in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This is a newly constructed fire station that will primarily serve the community in City Council District 5. The surrounding neighborhood is part of the Metro Verde development that offers a range of housing opportunities with a wide variety in size and price. Residents are primarily families with young children. The fire station location is near Monte Vista Elementary School and Mesa Middle School. Red Hawk golf course sits adjacent to the area.

The area proposed for public art at the site is approximately 15 sq. ft. for a stand-alone piece. If more than one stand-alone piece, size may be maximum of 3000 square ft. The terrain is flat. Artists may visit the site to better understand its layout and context. Refer to site maps and photos for specific art location and context.

Project Amount

$100,000.00 is available to the artist or artist team for the completed and installed project.  Project amount includes all fees and expenses associated with the design, fabrication and installation of the project, including but not limited to: the completed work of art, ladders, scissor-lift, scaffolding, materials, equipment, labor, cement pad, lighting, certifications and permits, engineering documents, insurance, taxes, shipping, identification plaque, and written and professional photographic documentation of the completed project.
